Wifi Calling: The beginner's Guide!!!

Most of the readers think that yes I’m waiting for this one. Right. Because in recent times we heard this term was coined by almost all the telecommunication industries like Airtel, Jio, VI in India and also they told that they offer free wifi calling. So how I can use this facility? What is it? And why is it gaining so much popularity in recent times? All these questions are running on our minds. So please tell us the details about it. If you have this type of thought, then this article is for you. Yes, today we discussed wifi calling. So no further delay let’s get started.

I think before move on to the technical definition, I’ll give you one simple real-life example for a better understanding of the concept. If you’re in your favorite coffee shop in the morning because you want to drink a coffee to cool yourself because of today’s important meeting, suddenly you remembered that you forgot to bring the meeting file so you want to make the call to your home and ask someone to bring it but there is the poor signal in the coffee shop, then what did you do? The first solution that comes to your mind is to run. Right, did you know what is the problem in this situation? Cellular Signal. But according to this article, if you have the wifi signal in that area and also your device have the VoWifi(another name of Wifi calling), then you can make the call without the cellular signal. This means If you have the wifi and the VoWifi enabled device, then you can make the call without a cellular network.

I think now you have somewhat idea about wifi calling and the working process of wifi calling. But this is not enough for us, so let’s move on to the technical definition.

Wifi calling is like a regular calling on your smartphone, except your carrier routes the call over an available wifi network instead of its cellular network. This means when you can make a call on your device, then your device will automatically select the best network – cellular or wifi – you don’t need to do anything.

Now all of you have a clear understanding, here some of you have one doubt “Which means VoWifi and VoIP are the same?” No definitely not. For better understanding read the following.

VoIP means Voice over IP (Internet Protocol) which means you can make the calling over the internet using third-party apps like Whatsapp, Telegram, Google Duo, etc. whereas in VoWifi your phone will automatically select the best one (either cellular or wifi) and there is no need for any third-party apps which means you can use your normal call apps.

Ok, now we understand the concept and the working process of Wifi calling. Then it’s time to know the pros and cons of this technology. Let’s dig it.

The major advantages of the wifi calling methods are listed here:

  • Best option for weak network locations
  • Extend battery life – while we use the cellular network every time it will drain the battery for searching better signal, the new technology will overcome this limitation
  • No additional charges – some of the countries collect the charges for wifi calling but in India there is no charge for wifi calling.
  • No third party apps required

Apart from all these pros it has some limitations also they are listed as follows:

  • While in the slower internet connections, the voice quality will be poor.
  • Same like that, if there are more devices is connected to the same wifi, then it leads the slower internet connections
  • While the slow connection may also lead to echoes or delays. This lag is especially noticeable while making video calling on VoWifi.
  • If there is no cost for this one, but it consumes some wifi data although the actual usage is relatively on the lower side.

Overall we says that wifi calling is the best alternative option for cellular calling even it has the limitation. Because it makes you don’t need a device that containing a SIM card nor be close to a cellular network, but you can make a phone call. This sounds good, right.
