The Story of Future Computing (Edge AI)

After some time, I have the time to explain one new and upcoming technology to you. This one is called Edge AI. It’s the combination of both AI (Artificial Intelligence) and Edge computing. I think you’re all known that AI (Artificial Intelligence) is nothing that happens if the computer starts to think. Now move on to the first term Edge (no) the correct form is Edge Computing, it is nothing but a distributed computing paradigm that brings computation and data storage to the location of device, which means it replaces the cloud storage and done all processing on the local storage. This will reduce the processing time, reduce cost, improves security and privacy.

Now all of you understand what AI and Edge computing is. So now we move on to the exact definition for Edge AI. Edge AI is the concept that runs the AI algorithms locally on the hardware device, without requiring any connection. It uses the data that is generated from the device and processes it to give real-time insights in less than few milliseconds and also this process are done without internet and cloud storage accessing.

According to the above definition, the Edge AI provides the following advantages:

1)   Security and privacy

2)   Reduce cost and latency time

3)   Reducing the power consumption thus increases the battery life

4)   Real time analytics

5)   Scalability

6)   Automated decision making

The above lists of things are the pros of Edge AI. Apart from this, edge technology devices do not require any specialized maintenance by data scientists or AI developers. The graphic data flows are automatically delivered for monitoring; therefore it is called autonomous technology.

The list of edge AI technology is long. Some of them are facial recognition, real-time traffic updates on the smartphone, semi autonomous device or smart devices and etc. other Edge AI-enabled devices are drones, robots, smart speakers, video games, security cameras, and wearable health monitoring devices. Below as a few more areas where edge AI is expected to continue to be used:

·       It will provide intelligence to the security camera to detect the suspicious activities in real-time for more efficient and less expansive services.

·       The autonomous devices will increase their capacity to process data and images in real-time for better transpiration services.

·       It will monitor the machinery for possible defects or errors in the production chain to avoid accidents.

·       It will be used for the analysis of medical images in emergency medical care.

There is no limitation to this technology unless the invention is stopped. After the crisis of Covid 19, the ingenuity of the companies have led to deploying solutions based on AI technology to provide accurate information in real-time.

As per the above details, all of you come to the false notion that Edge will replace Cloud. This is not true. Edge will works in a complimentary way with Cloud. All the time data will be processed in the Cloud, but user-generated data that belongs to the user can be operated and processed on Edge.

So finally, with AI on the Edge, we can expect a lot of change in the technical field. This includes the growth and demand for IoT devices, the emergence of the 5G network, smart devices and etc. Therefore we have to wait and watch what are the changes it made?
