Welcome, all of you for the 25th article of this blog. It was the first milestone achieved by this blog. But this is not an achievement but we have to do more things on this platform. I thank all the people who will read and support me until this, and I also need your support for the future also. Once again thank you for your support. Ok, let’s finish this here and start to explore the things for today’s topic.
Today's topic is Web GIS. Before move on to the definition,
we have to know the details about GIS and where it used. Here GIS refers
Geospatial Information System or Geographic Information System. The concept of GIS
is none other than a system for capturing, storing, analyzing, and managing
geographic data and its associated attributes which are spatially referenced to
the earth. In simple words, it is a computer system capable of storing and
processing geographically referenced information. In a more generic sense, GIS is
a system that helps the end-user to clarify doubt about the geographic
data. Through the definition, you all know that what GIS is and where it
used. It basically used for geographic-based data retrievals like mapping a particular area or location identification. This means GIS connects data to a
map integrating location data (where things are) with all types of descriptive
information like landmarks. Ok, through these things you’re all getting the idea
of the GIS working process now move on to the topic of Web GIS.
Web GIS is an advanced form of GIS, available on the web
platform. Here the data exchange takes place between the server (GIS server) and
the client (any device that asks the GIS information like a web browser). Here each
server has a unique URL so that the client can easily access it. Ok in this
technology, GIS is integrated with the web, but how it will use for us?
Here I list down some of the uses of web GIS:
- Geospatial analysis: measurement, optimal driving path, routing, pollution dispersion modeling, retail site selection.
- Location-specific advertising and brand based on the mapping.
- Flood management, forest management, and natural disaster management
- Web GIS in daily life: location-based service (LBS) supported by mobile web, smartphone, and tablets. LBS includes services to identify a location of a person or object such as discovering the nearest ATM, restaurant, shops, and hotel, etc which also includes package tracking and vehicle tracking services.
Therefore we are using Web GIS technology in our daily
life but we are unaware of it. Based on those usages, Web GIS is much more
flexible, agile, customizable, and capable of providing efficient workflow.
But we want to know some more characteristics for better
understanding:
- It is a platform-independent one
- Support large number of users simultaneously
- Web GIS is relying on HTML client supports different Operating System
- Better cross-platform capability
- Ease to use
- Unified system update
- User-friendly interface
After knowing the characteristics of web GIS you all understand why is it gaining much more popularity, it is a platform-independent
one which means you can use it in any type of OS or browser or device without
any lag. And the other characteristics of a unified update means if there are any new
details are found then it will automatically be updated in all places, which means
it provides better consistency. So through all these characteristics, you all
know that what Web GIS means and how it affects our daily life.
Now I have one question for you.
Did you know the Web GIS is played an important role in every
search we made on a browser?
But hereafter you, all know the mechanism behind the search
results in our browser. Remember every time we search the details on the browser and it will show the details based on the search even those results also depend on your location. For example, if you’re searching electronic
showroom, then Google not show all the showroom but shows the showroom near
you this thing will do through this technology. So hereafter consider this
while searching.
